History of Freedom to Read Inc.
The mission of Freedom to Read Inc. is to change the lives of the people of the Bahamas so they can reach their fullest potential through the power of free access to literacy.
Freedom to Read Inc. began when librarian Susy Siel recognized a need for free access to literacy on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. Siel had been visiting the island for decades with her parents, and had seen first-hand the need for quality libraries stocked with current books and new computers.
Siel first delivered books to the Gregory Town Public Library in 2002. In 2005, Siel worked as a teacher for Exceptional Education Outreach, and during this time she set up a library in Bluff at the North Eleuthera Primary School. Over the next several years, Siel continued to expand free access to literacy by bringing more books to the island and developing more libraries.
Freedom to Read Inc. was incorporated in 2012, and since then, the organization has partnered with community members and leaders to establish 13 libraries on Eleuthera.
